For me, this piece is about strength and grace – not just in its subject, but in how it’s composed. Dandelions are often dismissed as weeds, yet they carry resilience and symbolism. Their seed heads are clocks, ticking away with every breath that scatters them.
In this painting, you’ll find the plant in several stages – flower, half-blown, and seed – a full portrait of time itself.
I wanted a botanical that felt architectural, with bold shapes and strong lines, but that also rewards a second look. Up close, the layered textures of gouache and watercolour reveal delicate shifts of depth and tone.
The dandelion spheres become engines of movement, their star patterns pulling the eye in steady orbits. It’s simultaneously explosive and slow.
Ultramarines, indigos, and violets carry the weight of the composition, while a single burst of yellow insists on being seen.
It’s a reminder that resilience can be striking – and that beauty often hides in the things we overlook. A bold focal point, made to radiate vibrant strength in any space.

Sizes and Framing
- 21 × 30 cm (A4) → ~8.3 × 11.8 in
- 30 × 40 cm → ~11.8 × 15.7 in
- 30 × 42 cm (A3) → ~11.8 × 16.5 in
- 40 × 50 cm → ~15.7 × 19.7 in
All of my prints include a white border. That border keeps the artwork’s proportions true, gives breathing room, and provides space for a mount (mat) without cropping the image. They look great with a mount (classic gallery look) or without (clean, contemporary – just add spacers so the glazing doesn’t touch).
What’s a mount? A bevel-cut board that surrounds the image inside the frame to add visual space and protect the print.
What’s an aperture? The window opening in the mount—the exact size of what will be visible.
Your two framing routes
1) Pre-bought frame (fast & affordable)
Great for all four sizes above. If the frame includes a mount, always check the aperture (window) size – not just the frame size.
UK places to buy
- IKEA – many frames come with a mount whose aperture is sized to a smaller, standard print. On each product page, IKEA lists this under “Good to know” / “Useful information.” Example (LOMVIKEN 30×40 frame):
“This frame fits with a picture that has dimensions 21×30 cm if you use it with the mount, and it fits with a picture that has dimensions 30×40 cm if you choose to use the frame without the mount.” (IKEA)
Translation: buy the 30×40 cm frame to:
use its mount with a 21×30 cm print (aperture sized just under 21×30), or remove the mount and frame a 30×40 cm print edge-to-edge. - John Lewis & Partners – wide range of A4, A3, 30×40, 40×50 poster frames; sizes are clearly listed. (John Lewis & Partners)
- Dunelm – budget-friendly poster and photo frames in 30×40 and 40×50 ranges. (Dunelm)
- Habitat (via Argos) – popular 12×16" (30×40 cm) frames; good off-the-shelf option. (Argos)
- Desenio – useful for buying separate mounts; they list aperture sizes (e.g., a 30×40 mount with a 20×29 cm opening for 21×30 posters). (Desenio)
Tip for premade frames with mounts:
Match your print to the listed aperture. If the IKEA page says, “fits a picture 21×30 cm with the mount,” that mount’s aperture is sized for 21×30. If you don’t want a mount, use the larger size stated for “without the mount” (e.g., 30×40). (IKEA)
2) Professional framer (custom, conservation-grade)
Ask them to either:
- Cut a mount to your image area (aperture slightly smaller by 2–3 mm each side), or
- Float-mount the whole sheet so the white border and paper edges remain visible.
Request acid-free mount/backing, UV-filter glazing, and spacers so the glazing never touches the print.
Colour choices
- Frames: black, white, or natural woods are timeless. Let the art lead – higher-contrast or detailed pieces often look best in simpler profiles.
- Mounts: white/off-white is safest; black or coloured mounts can be striking but test against the print. A slightly wider bottom margin (museum weight) looks refined.
Glazing (front protection)
- Standard glass: economical, heavier; can reflect.
- UV-filter glass: reduces fading – good near daylight.
- Anti-reflective/museum glass: minimal glare + UV; premium.
- Acrylic (plexi): light, shatter-resistant (great for large frames or kids’ rooms); pick UV-protective where possible.
Materials & build (for longevity)
- Acid-free (pH-neutral) mount and backing
- Archival hinging (Japanese paper + starch paste, or archival tape)
- Spacers or deep frame so glazing doesn’t touch
- Dust-sealed back; hang away from direct sun and humidity
